Ms. Jyoti Waghmare is dedicated and a passionate environmentalist. She aspires to reach the apex in the field of research releasing tremendous potential of Geoinformatics for environmentally sound and sustainable development.
She received her Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry in 2010 and Master’s degree in Environmental Sciences in 2012 from University of Mumbai. To supplement her interest she opted for a diploma course in Remote Sensing and Geographical Information System from Mumbai University and successfully completed in the year 2013. Her research interests centre on Geoinformatics, climate change, Conservation of Natural resources and sustainable solutions to urban environmental issues.
Her work experience includes socio-economic impact assessment and risk assessment studies, plotting of ground features on Google Earth and Wikimapia, creation and maintenance of Geodata, scrutinizing proposals of various categories of industrial and infrastructural projects, creating comprehensive analysis reports for Forest and Environmental Clearance under Environmental Impact Assessment notification of Ministry of Environment and Forests. Also, being a data visualization enthusiast she contributed to the company’s website through several articles and graphical publications on current environmental issues and environmental day’s celebrated worldwide promoting environmental awareness.
Ms. Jyoti has assisted Thane Municipal Corporation pollution control cell in conducting air and noise quality assessment at road intersections/Chowks of Thane City which also provided her the opportunity to interact with a Government organization. She has represented her college at various academic platforms by actively participating and volunteering for various events, workshops and seminars showcasing current environmental issues and multidisciplinary applications of RS and GIS. She has also conducted practical on satellite image interpretation using visual image interpretation keys for M.Sc. Environmental Sciences students.
Her experience in the corporate industry, research work in geomatics and interaction with governmental organisation has piqued her interest in exploring sustainability as a key tool to achieve tangible results in environmental conservation efforts and has brought her to Urban Expansion Observatory where she has joined as Image Analyst.
Shreyas Bhogte graduated with a Masters in Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing from Symbiosis Institute of Geo-informatics in 2010. He was working as a “GIS Specialist” with JustDial Ltd., Mumbai where his responsibilities includes updating all pan India street Level Geocode through Open Street Maps as well as processing and re-structuring all street level Geocode via QGIS software along with processing street layers in .SHP format using QGIS software.
His team has collected accurate Geocodes for more than a million listings which has had a tremendous effect on the web-search as well as on the JustDial in-coming calls.Prior to joining JustDial Pvt. Ltd., He has worked with MapMyIndia where his responsibilities include Total Quality Check before sending the GIS data into Navigator, also to do all the Topological checks and Geocoding for Point of Interest. He has completed a project on “Estimation of Vegetation Biomass (Carbon Sequestration Potential) for Beed, Aurangabad and Jalna districts of Maharashtra, India using Geospatial Techniques” with Indian Space Research Organization as a part of his summer internship while studying Masters at Symbiosis Institute of Geoinformatics, Pune, India.
His hobbies include Astronomy, Cricket and Photography.
He is a member of leading Astronomy institution ‘Khagol Mandal’ and has volunteered their programs.
He has worked as a Trainer and Expert Astronomer Examiner in September 2006 at 11th International Astronomy Olympiad, held at Mumbai and He also has attended Indian Amateur Astronomers Meet, held at Ponda, Goa in the year 2005.
Mr. Saikat Maiti is an Image analyst at the UXO, India. He completed his bachelor degree (2010) from University of Calcutta, Kolkata and masters (2012) from Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata in Geography. His masters project was entitled “Avulsion of River Jalangi and Formation of Cut-off”. Before joining the UXO, he joined as trainee at Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS), ISRO, Dehradun for mid career training course on Geoinformation science and Earth Observation with specialization on Natural Hazard and Disaster Risk Management (JEP of IIRS and ITC, Netherlands). During his post graduate diploma (2013-2014) at IIRS he developed a project entitled “Development of Hydrological Tool for Flood Peak Estimation Using Open Source Geospatial Tool”. Saikat Maiti has doing a general project entitled “A Geo-environmental Appraisal of the Paro Dzong, Bhutan”. He also completed a certificate course on Natural Hazard and Disaster Management from Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU). He recently resides at Panvel, Navi Mumbai.
Mr. Sanjeev Kumar is an Image Analyst at the UXO, India. He received his M.Sc. in Geography from Bangalore University, Bangalore and his B.Sc. in Geography from Calicut University, Kerala. Before joining as an Image Analyst at UXO; he joined as a trainee at Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS), ISRO- Dehradun for mid-career training course on Geoinformation science and Earth Observation with specialization on Geoinformatics, it’s a Joint Education Program of IIRS and ITC (University of Twente), Netherlands. He recently published a manuscript with his supervisors, Mr. Hari Shankar (Scientist, IIRS) and Mr. Kapil Oberai (Scientist, IIRS), entitled WebGIS Based Multimode Road Transportation System: A Case Study of Dehradun City, in which he was done Post Graduate Diploma research during two months period. His master degree is entitled on Demographic Characteristics of Kerala State. He currently resides in Mumbai and his families are in Kerala.
Miss. Kalpana Pardeshi is a postgraduate in M.Sc. (Geoinformatics) from University of Pune, Pune. She obtained her postgraduate degree in M.A. (Geography) from University of Pune. She also has completed an advanced course on “Geoweb Services-Technology and Applications” conducted by IIRS (Indian Institute of Remote Sensing) on March 2013. She has good command in various software such as ArcGIS 9.3, ERDAS Imagine 9.2, ArcView GIS 3.2a, Autodesk Map 5, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, HEC-Geo-RAS toolbar. She has awareness of equipment such as Garmin GPS-72. She has delivered expert lectures at National Water Academy, Pune. She has attended and presented papers at various national conferences. Her areas of interest include Coastal and Applied Geomorphology, Flood Modeling, Watershed Management, Drought, Applications of Remote Sensing and GIS.
Mr. Sagar Gawade obtained his M.A. degree in Geography from University of Pune, Pune. Subsequently, he obtained his postgraduate degree in M.Sc. (Geoinformatics) from University of Pune, Pune. He also has completed an advanced course on “Geoweb Services-Technology and Applications” conducted by IIRS (Indian Institute of Remote Sensing) on March 2013. He has completed an advanced diploma in Computer Designing, Accounting and Programming. He has attended and presented papers in various national conferences and has delivered expert lectures at National Water Academy, Khadakwasla, Pune. He has expertise in GIS and RS applications in Water, Land Use Land Cover, Electricity Mapping and Road Mapping. In addition to above, he has good profeciency in various software such as ArcGIS 9.3, ERDAS Imagine 9.2, Autodesk Map 5, ArcView GIS 3.2a, HEC-RAS, HEC-Geo-RAS, HEC-HMS.
Mr. M. Dhananjayan is an Image Analyst at UXO – India Urban Expansion Observatory, Mahatma Education Society, Navi Mumbai. He received his B.E. in Computer Science and Engineering and M.Tech. in Remote Sensing in Anna University. After which he became a project associate (GIS) in the National Institute of Technical Teachers Training and Research (NITTTR), Chennai. He is responsible for digitization, mapping, analysis and MIS Integration in GIS. After his 1.5 years of career in NITTTR as project associate (GIS), he has joined as an Image Analyst at UXO-India, Navi Mumbai. Apart from as a Project Associate he conducted GIS Training Classes for Overseas Training Course Participants in NITTTR, Chennai. Currently he resides in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra.
Mr. Nithin Mankar completed M.Sc. Geoinformatics from University of Pune, Pune. He has completed research on “Spatio Temporal Analysis in Daund Tahsil from Geography Department of Pune University, under the guidance of Dr. B.C. Vaidya. He was working with TomTom India Pvt. Ltd, as Digital Cartographer. He has completed an advanced training course on “Geoweb Services – Technology and Applications” conducted by IIRS, Dehradun and has presented paper entitled “Problem of agriculture in Pargaon village”, in the National Seminar on Problem and Prospect of Agricultural Development in India organized by Department of Geography, Rajarshi Chhatrapati Shahu Collage, Kolhapur, Hupari.
Miss. Archana Balkrishna Sidwadkar is Masters in Geology (First Class) from the University of Pune, Maharashtra. She has received her Bachelor Degree in Geology from Fergusson College in Pune. She has completed a Post graduation Diploma in Geographical Information System and Remote Sensing in December 2014.
During her education she conducted a number of geological field surveys in the mines of Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Goa. She had her Hydrological excursions in Konkan and Karnataka. She also has interests in music, photography and adventure sports.
Mr. Mohammad Junaid received his post graduate degree from University of Kashmir and completed my project dissertation on “Monitoring glacier parameters in the parts of North Western Zanskar basin Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir”. He has expertise in operating various ESRI and Intergraph software. Besides this he has attended training programs coordinated by IIRS Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, Dehradun on RS, GIS and GPS, Microwave Remote Sensing and presented papers in various international and national conferences.
S. Rashmita Patro completed her B.Sc.(IT) from Kuvempu University, Karnataka in 2009 and simultaneously completed GNIIT from NIIT. She began her career in 2010 at COWI INDIA PVT LTD in Gurgaon, Haryana as GIS associate and worked as a Quality Manager at her company. She was one of the key members of an organization which is working with simulation projects using GIS, LiDAR and Mobile mapping for the first time in India.
Mr. Suman Kumar is a qualified Urban and Rural Planner. He has acquired his Bachelors in Physical Planning from School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi in 2010 and Masters in Urban and Rural Planning from Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee in 2014. He has an experience of more than two years Village Development Plans and Master Plans in Rajasthan, Local Area Plans in Delhi, Eco-tourism Village Development Plan in Uttarakhand and GIS Thematic Mapping of Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh.
Right after his graduation, he worked in the field of planning for two years as a Project Co-ordinator in Cadcon Consultants Pvt. Ltd in Jaipur and thereafter as Planning Officer in the Association of Municipalities and Development Authorities (AMDA) in Delhi. In the former, he worked on Master Plans prepared under Urban Area Limit notified U/S 3 (1) of U I Act 1959 for towns Bissau, Bhusawar and Taranagar and Village Development Plans for Dag, Sunel and Khanpur (District Jhalawar) of Rajasthan. He was involved in site visits, Town Map & Existing Landuse Map preparation from total station survey data and imagery, collation of secondary data, conducting primary surveys for land use and transportation and writing reports. He also undertook stakeholder consultation with government, private and other related agencies for map verification, identification of gap analysis & proposal viability/ feasibility. Simultaneously, he also worked on Integrated Housing & Slum Development Program and Sector Plans for HUDCO, Jaipur and UIT, Kota respectively.
In the latter, he worked on Local Area Plan for the three rural electoral wards of Narela and the three urban electoral wards of Kirti Nagar. His contribution includes Base Map preparation, undertaking field surveys, secondary database collection, coordination with MCD and other line departments, mapping and statistical analysis, interpretation of MPD and ZDP on Local Area Plans, identification of non-conforming uses in the respective wards and proposal mapping. These outputs have been delivered to the Monitoring Committee in four stages.
Following this, he pursued his Master’s Degree where as a part of the curriculum, he underwent training in Birdsong & Beyond, Gurgaon, Haryana. He assisted in the preparation of Eco-Tourism Village Development Plan 2031, for three villages Gunilyala Khal, Pokhari, Chamoli where he worked on infrastructure mapping, khasra mapping and analysis of built use in ArcGIS. His research paper on “Sustainability Assessment of Human Intervention in Terms of Hydroelectric Projects on Alaknanda River Valley” was published in the International Journal of Research (IJR), Vol-1, Issue-5, June 2014. ISSN: 2348-6848.
He has also been involved in organizing NOSPLAN 2009 in Delhi where he played the role of Unit Co-ordinator.
Image Analyst Supervisor
Sharad Shingade is a Image analyst supervisor at the UXO established by Mahatma Education Society and New York University Urbanization Project. He has completed his M.Sc. in Geoinformatics from ITC-Faculty of Geo-information Science and Earth Observation, University of Twente, The Netherlands. He was a recipient of European Union Erasmus Mundus scholarship for pursuing his M.Sc. Geoinformatics. Before that he has also completed M.Sc. in Environmental Sciences from Department of Environmental Sciences, University of Pune as well as he has worked in same department as Junior Research Fellow on project funded by CPCB, New Delhi, Govt. of India. He has qualified UGC-NET, SET in Environmental Sciences, eligibility criteria declared by UGC for Assistant professor. Before joining UXO he was worked as a GIS and Remote sensing consultant for startup company where he handled challenging Geospatial projects. He has total 5 years working experience in Geoinformatics and Environmental Science field.
Sharad’s research interest includes Satellite remote sensing, image processing, GIS, spatial modeling, classical and advanced Geostatistics (spatial statistics), Air quality and climate change, Pollution plume modeling etc. He is more enthusiastic to work in challenging Geospatial domain where remotely sensed earth observation data useful for understanding spatial process (e.g. urban expansion in spatio-temporal context etc.).
Dr. Priam Pillai graduated with a PhD in mechanical engineering from MIT in 2011. He is currently an Associate Professor at PIIT in Mumbai, India as well as serves as the Chief Operating Officer of Mahatma Education Society (MES).
He has started many new initiatives at MES including launch of Google Apps for Education in the 48 institutions, Industry-Academia Interface with Airbus Industries, development and adaptation of open-source software and technologies for education and many others. He is the Founding Partner of the India Urban Expansion Observatory, an Urban Research Center setup jointly with New York University, Stern School of Business.
As a faculty member at PIIT, his research interests include development of novel bioinspired sensors and instruments as well as development of smart material based technologies. He is the winner of numerous awards from the US government as well as private organizations. He was awarded the Gore Award for innovation by the Institute of Soldier Nanotechnologies sponsored by the US Army, the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow Award, the UC Berkeley Materials Science and Engineering Department Citation. In 2010, he received an outstanding service award for assisting the Boston police department and district attorneys office in the use of thermal cameras in their investigations.

Paul Romer, an economist and policy entrepreneur, is University Professor at NYU and founding director of the NYU Stern Urbanization Project, where he also leads the Charter Cities initiative. He is also the director of NYU’s Marron Institute of Urban Management. Whereas the Urbanization Project focuses on rapidly urbanizing countries, the Marron Institute conducts research on the challenges faced by cities in all countries.
Before coming to NYU, Romer taught at Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business. While there he took an entrepreneurial detour to start Aplia, an education technology company dedicated to increasing student effort and classroom engagement. Prior to Stanford, Romer taught in the economics departments at the University of California, Berkeley, the University of Chicago, and the University of Rochester. In 2002, he received the Recktenwald Prize for his work on the role of ideas in sustaining economic growth.
Romer earned a doctorate in economics from the University of Chicago after doing graduate work at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Queens University.

Shlomo (Solly) Angel is an adjunct professor at NYU and senior research scholar at the NYU Stern Urbanization Project, where he leads the Urban Expansion initiative. Angel is an expert on urban development policy, having advised the United Nations, the World Bank, and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). He currently focuses on documenting and planning for urban expansion in the developing world.
In 1973, he started a program in Human Settlements Planning and Development at the Asian Institute of Technology in Bangkok. He taught at the Institute from 1973 to 1983, while researching housing and urban development in the cities of East, South, and Southeast Asia. From the mid-80s to mid-90s, he worked as a housing and urban development consultant to UN-Habitat, the Asian Development Bank, and the Government of Thailand. In 2000, he published Housing Policy Matters, a comparative study of housing conditions and policies around the world. From 2000 onward, he prepared housing sector assessments of 11 Latin America and Caribbean countries for the IDB and the World Bank.
Angel earned a bachelor’s degree in architecture and a doctorate in city and regional planning at the University of California, Berkeley.

Brandon Fuller is deputy director and research scholar at the NYU Stern Urbanization Project. He is also deputy director of New York University’s Marron Institute. The Marron Institute deepens the fundamental understanding of cities by working with civic innovators to improve urban management. Prior to joining NYU, Fuller was director of Charter Cities, a non-profit focused on the potential for new cities to drive reform in rapidly urbanizing countries. He previously worked for an education technology startup, Aplia, that offered online experiments and problem sets aimed at increasing student effort and engagement in the college classroom. Fuller was also an adjunct professor of economics at the University of Montana after earning his master’s degree there in 2003.

Patrick Lamson-Hall is a Research Scholar at the NYU Stern Urbanization Project. He recently completed his Masters in Urban Planning at the NYU Wagner School of Public Service. His research interests include urbanization in the developing world, development economics, and historical urbanization.
Manuel Madrid is a Project Manager at the gvSIG Association, a non-profit organization which main objective is the promotion of the Open Geospatial Technologies. He completed his Master in Valuation, Cadastre and Territorial Information Systems at the Miguel Hernández University of Elche (Spain). He also completed a Bachelor in Survey Ingineering at the Universitat Politèctica de Valencia (Spain). His research interests include Free and Open Source Software for Geospatial, Cartography and Urban Planning.
