A brief description of the project is given below:
NYU, in collaboration with UN Habitat, Lincoln Institute of Land Policy and Mahatma Education Society, has recently obtained the preliminary results of a two-year long study on the quantity and quality of development in cities. This study, primarily conducted at Mahatma Education Society’s Urban Expansion Observatory, confirms what many planners and policymakers have long suspected - the world’s cities are growing very rapidly, and urban planning is failing to keep pace with this growth. As a result, large areas of cities are developing informally, with limited access to intra-city roads, a low share of land in streets, and poor walkability and connectivity. This study will be used to inform the New Urban Agenda and will be presented at the Habitat III conference in Quito, Ecuador, in October 2016. Preliminary results will be presented on June 14th, along with a discussion of the basic steps that cities can take to manage their urban expansion in order to make cities more sustainable, equitable, and productive.
